When a hurricane comes, it causes so many damages that you would have to see them to believe them. It is like a nightmare that you just want to wake up from, it is that bad. Hurricanes can bring damaging winds, extreme rainfall, and floods. The winds can be very hard and can blow the roof right off a house and cause anything not nailed down to fly through the air. Sometimes even if something is nailed down it will get ripped up and go flying anyway. Rain and floods can be everywhere and move very fast. When it is like that, it is very dangerous because it can pull things with the current of the water and move it down stream or under it.
Debris will be floating in the flood water and the water gets into building and homes. Homes can be torn down in minutes and everything you have could be gone when it is a raging flood. Sometimes people get trapped on the roof of their home or other buildings trying try to keep out of the water. The water can be harmful because it can harbor all kinds of sewage and chemicals that can make you very sick and sometimes affect your health long term.
When floods happen, the sewers can be filled with water and the refuse that it is them can come floating out. This is one of the things that makes the water of a natural disaster flood so very nasty. Floods often come with hurricanes. There can be tremendous surges from the coastlines themselves when the hurricane makes landfall and the excessive rain can cause nearby rivers and streams to overflow too. All of this water combined can make a disastrous situation like a hurricane so much worse. This is what happened along the southern coastline and inland areas when Hurricane Katrina hit.
Most of us got to witness what devastation a hurricane can cause when we watched the news coverage of Hurricane Katrina. We saw how tragic it because of the loss of life and property. Many of those that lived in that area at the time are still recovering, but some of them never will. The best thing to do if there is a hurricane warning in your area is to evacuate when you are told to. If there is time, board up your home and take what valuables you might have time to gather. Riding out the storm might sound brave, but it is probably the most dangerous thing you can do.
