Traditional South Indian Weddings Beginner’s Guide

I am writing this article because I recently got married. It’s a wonderful feeling and what makes it even more special, is to have a perfect wedding with the perfect man… and, I had both!

We had a South Indian, Telugu wedding. We started off by offering prayers to Lord Vinayaka, so that there would be no problems during the wedding. Then I went shopping for my wedding saree (most of the Indian brides wear a saree for the wedding), which is a Kanchi Pattu (Kanchi silk) saree. It is considered auspicious to wear any shade of red or a yellow saree. Black is generally avoided in the wedding.

One of the common mistakes that most women make is to starve themselves for the weeding so that they could drop down a couple of sizes. A sudden crash diet in the midst of the hectic run-up to the wedding will only make them look very tired and exhausted in the wedding and wedding pictures. I would recommend one to eat the right amount of the right food. Do drink a lot of water and fruit juices as preparing for the wedding could be quite exhausting. Once I went to a wedding of a friend and for a moment I thought I was at the wrong wedding! My friend looked so different and like somebody else with lots of makeup. Please keep it simple and get a trial done and you will look gorgeous. Try to look YOUR BEST, after all… it’s YOUR wedding!

Food is an integral part of a wedding. Traditionally, a wedding dinner includes 10 to 15 entrees and 4 to 5 side dishes and 4 to 5 starters. The food is typically a vegetarian fare, with dishes including plain rice, biryani, breads (naan), dosa (rice crepes), Sambaar (lentil soup), Daal, Rasam, vegetable curries and fried vegetables. Another important part of the dinner is the dessert selection – which is considered auspicious to serve sweets on special occasions. Popular desserts include kheer (rice pudding), laddu, barfee, halwa, jalebi, gulab jamun, roshogulla etc. and sweets made with dry fruits like cashew nuts, almonds, raisins, etc.

Pre-wedding events can go on for a couple of days at both the bride’s and the grooms house. On the brides side, the most popular event these days is the mehandi function where the brides hands are decorated with ornate and intricate designs using Henna. Another event is Sangeet where both the families of the bride and the groom sing and dance the whole night, and have dinner together.

Indian weddings are typically lavish in scale, and involve hundreds of guests. Celebrations typically cover a few days to a week. All the pre-wedding formalities are performed by the brides parents, and typical costs range from a couple of tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars. A couple of videos of Indian weddings can be found on the Internet. Enjoy!
