If your house is up for sale and you have had an offer you can’t refuse, but you have not yet found your ideal home you will be left with a dilemma. You may find that you have found somewhere or someone to stay with until you find your ideal home but unfortunately your furniture hasn’t.
This is where storage units become extremely handy. You have the option of storing as much or little as you like for any amount of time – although the minimum storage time is often one week.
You can store anything from large pieces of furniture to small personal belongings. Make sure that you carefully box up your household items so that they are protected from any knocks. Some storage companies offer a professional packaging service to save you the hassle of boxing everything up. However, it is likely that you will want to organise your own packing so that you know what is in each box.
It is also likely that the storage company will offer a variety of packaging products which are all specially reinforced to ensure that your products remain safe. This saves you having to trawl around the supermarket trying to find boxes – which have probably already been collapsed so will need extra reinforcement! Number each box and keep a note of what was in each one so that when it comes to unpacking you know where to look for certain items.
You can then either arrange for the storage company to come and collect your furniture and other possessions or you could deliver the items yourself which would save you money. Before the boxes go into the unit make sure that any boxes which contain breakables, such as glasses and plates, are clearly marked so they won’t be put at the bottom of the pile.
If you are storing any items that you think you may need at some point speak to the people at the storage facility so that they know to put these items at the front because it will save a lot of hassle should they be stored towards the back of the unit.
Once you have bought your new home you can then arrange for your possessions to be delivered to your new address. Alternatively you can pick them up yourself if you have the right-sized van.
