The Evolution of the Human Penis

Evolution has affected every single aspect of human physiology, from head to toe. And the human penis is no exception.

Humans are primates, and it has been found that the size of a primate’s testicles is relative to the promiscuity of the females of its species. The more the females are promiscuous, the bigger the testicles have to be in order to keep up with the demand for semen. Only chimpanzees have larger testicles than humans, due to the fact they have to pump out so much semen when the females are on heat.

The human penis is by far the largest of all primate penises. The average size of an erect human penis is 5 inches, which is significantly larger than a gorilla’s tiny 1.5 inch penis. Yet again, the reason for our large penis is due to the high rate of promiscuity in our species when compared with other primates.

When a woman has sex with more than one man, the man with the biggest penis will have the advantage of being able to deposit his semen deeper within her. This has the double advantage of positioning the semen deeper within the woman, and closer to her fallopian tubes, while also keeping the semen “out of reach” of the scooping action of any other penis that follows.

This scooping action is yet another evolved feature of the human penis. Just like other species of animal, and even insect, the human penis is shaped to “scoop out” the sperm of a rival male.

Males of some species of dragonfly have distinct barbs on the end of their penises that dig out the sperm of rival males. We humans have a glans – the head of the penis – with a coronal ridge that act as a scoop as a man thrusts his penis in and out of the vagina. Thrusting during sex completes this specifically evolved scooping mechanism, creating a piston like action that sucks and scoops out rival sperm before ejaculating.

Considering that a well disciplined man can thrust his penis in and out a couple of hundred times before ejaculating, this allows his penis to scoop as much rival semen as possible.

It is also important to note the role the females of our species have dictated the evolution of the penis. In evolution there are two types of “selection.” There is natural selection and there is sexual selection.

Sexual selection explains why, for example, the peacock has a very large tail. The females of this species, peahens, are sexually attracted to larger and more colorful tails.

This sexual selection also helps to explain why the human penis has evolved to become the largest of all primate penises. Human females prefer larger penises because larger penises give them greater pleasure, as has been shown by a recent Durex survey that found that over 75 percent of women prefer their man to have a large penis.

Evolution explains why we humans have the anatomy that we have. And the human penis is no exemption.
