Self Defense-Close Encounters of the Spraying Kind

“Sooner or later it will happen to everyone” or so I have written in the 400 plus articles on self defense not to mention the blogs and newsletters I write.

I am really into this stuff-helping people defend themselves, teaching, showing, talking and writing about the perils of living these days and how to avoid the bad guys because it is such a big problem. Last year it happened to me.

Several months ago I got a friend a tripack of pepper sprays one of which clips on to her car visor. Her old pepper spray was out of date so she needed some new ones anyhow. She never did have one for the car. Like the smart woman she was she promptly put it on her visor. Good going!!

Well one day we went to the mall in Santa Fe. I say we loosely because I drove her SUV so she could shop. I stayed in the car to do some reading, listening to smooth jazz, minding my own business. It was 2 PM on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

I had just retrieved my book out of the back of her SUV and forgot to relock the car.

So picture this! Me minding my own business, driver’s side window rolled down, sniffing the soon to be spring air, listening to some tunes, miles away in thought when suddenly the passenger door opens and it is not my friend.

Thank God for my lightening fast reflexes. Before the guy could even get the door all the way open, I had the pepper spray in his face with a strong “GET OUT” in one smooth instant-a split second.

The mall parking lot is patrolled. I found a security guard. The pervert, still screaming in pain, was hauled away. Another bad guy bites the dust. Spray in the face first ask questions later!

A violent crime occurs every 19 seconds and an assault every 29 seconds. For would be victims of a robbery, assault, theft, rape, murder, or kidnapping an investment of $10- $20 for a pepper spray is certainly worth the peace of mind and sense of security it provides. No one is safe from the crimes of today be it a personal assault or a home break in.

Please note that even though pepper spray is legal in all 50 states, some states and cities have restrictions. Check with your local police department. Literally thousands of police departments carry and use pepper spray. Why wouldn’t you?

Chances are very good that you are reading this because in some way crime has touched your life or you want to be proactive and protect yourself, family, home, or business from the ravages of crime. That is the first step.
