With the rates for violent crime continually fluctuating, it seems that the old adage “better safe than sorry” has never been more applicable. According to the United States Department of Justice, common locales for violent crimes are near a victim’s home, at school, or at a commercial establishment. It would seem then that no familiar place should be assumed consistently safe and people should always be prepared to defend themselves. There are many tools that you can use for protection.
Personal Alarms
Some manufacturers make personal alarms or screechers that are small and portable. They can be stored in a purse, bag, or on a keychain. They can be used to emit a loud and high-pitched noise that can startle an attacker or alert others when trouble is near.
Pepperspray
Pepperspray is a lachrymatory agent, a chemical compound that irritates the eyes to cause tears, pain, and even temporary blindness. The active ingredient in peppery spray that causes irritation is called capsaicin, which is derived from chili and pepper plants. Pepper spray can be purchased in small portable canisters and can sometimes be disguised as rings, pens, pagers, and lipstick tubes. Pepper spray can also be used as self-defense against more than just human attackers. It is sometimes manufactured specifically as a repellant for animals, such as aggressive, threatening dogs or even bears.
Stun Gun
In more extreme cases, a stun gun can be used. A stun gun is an electroshock weapon that uses electrical current to disrupt voluntary control of muscles. It stimulates motor and sensory nerves resulting in muscle contractions. They are used by law enforcement as less lethal weapons to subdue potentially dangerous subjects. The gun uses compressed nitrogen charges to propel two barbed dart-like electrodes that stay connected to the main unit by conductive wire. The barbs penetrate clothing and prevent removal. Because they can be dangerous, they are prohibited in some states, cities, and counties.
Self-defense course
It may be a good idea to take a self-defense course from a local martial arts academy. Many schools and academies provide short courses on behaviors that can prevent harmful situations or maneuvers and techniques that can help a victim get out of potentially dangerous or life threatening situations. These courses may emphasize awareness in avoiding these situations by thinking ahead and making good decisions.
These are just a few examples of self-defense tools. Whatever method you decide on, it is always a good idea to exercise prevention and put safety first.
