How Stun Guns Work and How To Use Them

A stun gun employs high volts of electricity to stop someone in an act of self-defense. By touching the prongs of the stun gun against the attacker it will immobilize him without doing any serious or permanent harm.

How Does it Work?

When the stun gun is used it releases high frequency voltage (but low intensity) into the muscles, which in turn attacks the nervous system. It interrupts the signals that constantly travel from your brain to your various muscles all day long. Muscles start working rapidly, but the body has no control over movements. Blood sugar in the body is quickly turned into lactic acid causing immediate energy loss and lack of function.

The impulses that travel through the body leave the attacker disoriented and unable to maintain his balance. He will be confused and unable to do anything for several minutes. However, there is no significant damage done to the heart or other bodily organs. This gives you time to get away and call for help.

How Do you Use it?

Shocking your attacker for a mere half-second may startle him, but nothing long-term. Using the stun gun for 1-2 seconds will cause more muscular spasms and daze him for a little longer. Three seconds of the stun gun will result in him losing his balance, muscle control, and leave him disoriented and confused. Obviously three seconds would be the optimum amount of stunning, but three seconds can be a lengthy amount of time when you are struggling with an attacker.

A person’s size and thickness of clothing can also affect the time it will take to disable him. What may take three seconds with one, might require five seconds with another individual. You need to be ready to hold the stun gun as forcibly as possible against your attacker for however long it takes for him to go down.

The best points of contact are the rib cage, upper hips, and shoulders. If you only touch an arm or leg, it will only disable that one limb. As a general rule, aim for anywhere on the torso, where the volts will affect the entire body.

When walking in dangerous places (i.e. a dark parking lot at night) it is best to have your stun gun out and ready for ultimate safety. You aren’t going to have time to fumble in your purse for it when under attack.

Common Misconceptions

Often stun guns are confused with Tasers. Tasers can reach a distance of up to 15 feet, while stun guns require direct contact. Even so, the electrical current does not pass from the attacker to you. Even if you are standing in water or are wet, you will not receive any shock. As long as you keep your fingers on the switch and within the safety zone plate, you should not feel any shocks of any kind. Getting your fingers too close to the probes, however can result in a slight zing. Use it safely and a stun gun can be an effective tool for self-defense.
