The next aspect of going to get a business online is to get a website. I know that this might seem daunting if you re new, but really it is not that scary. Your Website gives what you are selling credence and lets people know that you are serious about your business.
The first thing that you need to get is a domain. This is the address where your website will be living. The domain name is the thing that comes after the www.in any of the internet addresses that you see. The most well known extension is .com. But there are also: .info, .ws, .org, .net and so forth.
Since .com is the most recognizable form of address, it would behoove you to try and find an address that is not used with a .com extension. It seems that people will remember it easier. It might be easier to explain it like this. Both you and another are selling junked toys. You have junkedtoy.com and the other has junkedtoy.net.
They will most likely naturally type in junkedtoy.com and go to your site versus the other. Now can you understand how important it may be?
Your domain name should be the same as your website name! This may seem silly to say, but I can not tell you how important it is. The people that think of your website will think of it by name. If your website is the domain name then they will know exactly where to go. So when people think of junked toys and they type in junkedtoys.com, as the URL they will go to that site. Your site!
So you decide on a name, but still do not know if it is being used. To find that out you can go to any number of places such as: go daddy .com, nameboy.com,
dotster.com and register.com to name a few.
If the names you wanted are taken you can always use your own name. If you decide that you want a name that someone else is already using, you can go to a site called, whois.com. It will tell you who owns the domain and you can contact them and ask to buy it.
So now you know what name you want to use. You go to a registrar site and put it into the field that asks for what domain you want. It comes back that it is available and will cost from 10-30 dollars for the name. If you pay it you will now have the name for a year and can renew the same name for the same amount annually.
For those who would like a step by step description of the process:
Go to the website of the domain provider that you have chosen to use.
